will this likely murdered woman see justice?
The ex-boyfriend of a woman thought murdered has repeatedly declined lie detection analysis. Bailey Blunt disappeared in late 2023 while getting her stuff from her ex’s place near Willow Creek. At that time she’d reportedly texted a friend he was drunk and pulled a gun on her. 53 days later following a fugitive manhunt, Tyler Burrow was found in a camp in Oregon with Bailey’s truck and dog. However, Bailey’s body has not been found and Tyler has not been charged in her death. A rep from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Meg Ruiz, told me they've repeatedly offered lie detection analysis to Tyler, but he hasn’t participated which is within his rights. Due to the ongoing investigation, The Sheriff’s Office was unable to confirm a rumor that a witness had claimed Tyler stated he knew Bailey was shot. The reported area near Willow Creek, Berg Road, has reportedly been extensively searched numerous times, and Meg tells me the property owner knows to contact them if they find anything suspicious. The case recently received attention via the popular page Missing People In America.
a shocker in the alleged friendly city
Fortuna City Councilmember Kris Mobley has resigned amid an FBI investigation. This reportedly includes allegations of theft and embezzlement as a source noted the allegations come from Kris’ private activities and not city business. Reportedly she’s worked as a business manager for a local construction company. Fortuna officials apparently knew about the investigation months before her resignation and confirmed she never had access to city funds. They’re working on filling her city council seat. *** RHBB / LoCo
big national news reaching us at the local level
Trump pardoned two locals convicted in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. The two previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanors and were included in the approximately 1,600 people pardoned. Their charges, disorderly conduct and parading in the Capitol, were fairly minor compared to those who were convicted of violence or sedition in the 2021 events that left seven people dead. *** LoCo
offshore wind in the wind
Our U.S. rep Jared Huffman believes our local offshore wind project may be unaffected despite Trump's efforts. While a Trump executive order encouraged a review of existing offshore wind leases, Huffman argues it’s unlikely a lease like ours can be legally revoked. Reportedly, a delay in permitting may slow progress on our proposed offshore wind turbines, but there’s still a big commitment to advancing these things forward. We’ll keep an eye on these developments as they pertain to our local economy and broader renewable energy goals. *** LoCo
who will prevail
California’s Attorney General is challenging St. Joseph Hospital’s attempt to dismiss a notorious lawsuit. The litigation accuses the Eureka hospital of refusing to provide an emergency abortion to a woman facing life-threatening complications. The state says the hospital openly admits its religious policies conflict with state emergency care laws. A hearing regarding potential dismissal is set for Feb. 14. *** LoCo
a unique job for teenage actors
Eureka cops say they busted two businesses for selling alcohol to minor decoys. The CVS on West Harris and the Patriot gas station on Broadway were the accused culprits. They say 38 other businesses passed the test, which can result in fines, community service, or even the revocation of liquor licenses. *** T-S
a change in local TV news
There’s optimism for the new owners of the local NBC and CBS affiliates. Imagicomm sold KIEM and KVIQ to Marquee Broadcasting, a company that says they’re focused on small markets, community involvement, and neutral news. The now former owners, Imagicomm, are known for conservative Cowboy-focused programming as well as their historic roots in religious television. Local station management is reportedly optimistic about the change. *** LoCo

A local organization started a hotline to monitor local ICE activity. Centro del Pueblo secured the phone number to raise awareness and receive support if federal immigration enforcement ramps up local activity due to Trump's efforts. *** NCJ
the new guy is getting some responsibilities
Our new state rep Chris Rogers was appointed to some committees. A Democrat out of Santa Rosa, the new Assemblymember will have his hand in climate, energy, transportation, and natural resources. Chris recently won in the 2nd District with about 66% of the vote, filling the seat vacated by Jim Wood who was in that position since 2014. *** RHBB
and speaking of our reps
Our U.S. rep Jared Huffman is warning of potential authoritarian overreach by Donald Trump. Jared attended Trump’s inauguration and wrote a post noting authoritarian rhetoric, tones of Christian nationalism, mass deportations, and aggressive oil drilling, while also sharing some bipartisan moments of civility with people like Carrie Underwood and Tez Cruz. *** Facebook
speaking of federal government news
Hundreds of locals protested Trump’s presidency. The People’s March in Eureka was part of a number of simultaneous protests nationwide and was a rebranded continuation of the 2017 Women’s March. Signs took aim at Trump, gun violence, LGBTQ+ rights, climate change, immigration, and women’s rights, as well as an urge for more kindness and unity. Reportedly positive support majorly outweighed a few detractors. Protestors also took to the Arcata Plaza and Cal Poly Humboldt. *** RHBB / LoCo / LoCo / RHBB
Plus enthusiasm from the other side, but seated….
Dozens of Trump supporters did a parade from Fortuna to McKinleyville. Cars and trucks were adorned with pro-Trump merch. Reportedly, the turnout was smaller than rallies in past years as those involved said they hope Trump will lower the cost of gas and groceries. *** T-S
humans being bros in Eureka
Eureka has a new hub to help people with housing and jobs. The Uplift Eureka Community Resource Center in the Municipal Auditorium, or Muni, offers phone access, charging stations, computers, mail services, and help with housing, employment, and legal documents. Officials said they want the center to complement and not duplicate existing services for low to moderate-income people. *** RHBB
that runners high way up high in the state
Six runners trekked 107 miles from Arcata to Oregon. The run took a little less than 38 hours, including just 7 or so hours of sleep. Despite blisters, trench foot, and exhaustion, these fellas had fun jogging among some stunning scenery between here and Oregon. *** LoCo
