The Klamath River is flowing freely again after more than 20 years of efforts to remove four dams. The news marks the completion of the largest dam removal project in U.S. history. The river which runs from southern Oregon to the ocean in northern Humboldt County, looks to see salmon restoration and improved water quality. *** American Rivers
The Times-Standard reminded readers Humboldt County also buses homeless people out of the area. The paper noted Humboldt County has sent 309 homeless people elsewhere since 2021 through its Transportation Assistance Program. A facility serving free meals to those in need was targeted by vandals. St. Vincent de Paul in Eureka saw trash dumped at their front door. Staff refused to let it stop them from serving meals, and served chicken salad sandwiches that day. *** RHBB [After seeing comments about this excusing the vandal(s) behavior, a poll was posted on the Humboldt Last Week Instagram. 100% of respondents said the vandals suck. - MC]
The owner of a massage place in Eureka was accused of sexual assault. Officers say an investigation into the man revealed the alleged incident happened with a client during a massage and involved sexual battery as well as penetration with a foreign object. Foot Logic on F Street in Eureka has since been closed by Eureka Police. *** RHBB
Humboldt County Supervisors approved money to fight human trafficking. The $334K involves adding temporary positions and battling the enslavement of people, particularly in the black market cannabis industry. The quote from Sheriff Honsal: “...oftentimes, these are… people from foreign nations that are coming in and that are working these farms. We believe that they are victims of crime.” *** Loco
A new hospital in Garberville may begin construction in 2026. SoHum Health shared draft designs for a two-story facility which is set to replace the current hospital and clinic. It looks to include an ER and a primary care clinic among other things. The $75 million project could be completed by late 2028. *** RHBB
An officer at Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City was reportedly stabbed in the head by an inmate. Officials say the prisoner partially freed himself from handcuffs and attacked the guard with a makeshift weapon, somehow only causing minor injuries. The officer’s head wound saw swelling and his stab-resistant vest had a couple of punctures. The inmate, a murderer, is already serving life and may add attempted murder to his long list of sentences. The story is a reminder of the challenges at our nearby high-security prison up north. *** PBSP
An elderly man pulled a gun after being upset by the wait time at a McDonald’s up north. The 85-year-old man from Nevada pulled an unloaded gun during a yelling match in the Brookings McDonald's drive-thru, causing a big police response. The dispute started when the elderly fella was feeling impatient and honked at a 61-year-old. The Nevada man was cited for disorderly conduct while the victim chose not to supersize the elderly man’s McPunishment by not pressing charges. *** WRO

Former locals are looking to kick off their NFL seasons. Offensive lineman and former Eureka Logger Jake Hanson just signed to the New York Jets practice squad. And former Lumberjack Alex Cappa will continue starting as an offensive lineman for the Cincinnati Bengals as they kick off their season against the Patriots on September 8. Cappa was one of several Lumberjacks recently announced to join the Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics Hall of Fame. *** Jets / Bengals
Loleta ice cream Jersey Scoops is looking to hit a few grocery stores soon. This comes after SFGate wondered if the company’s shop could “save” Loleta. The owners are farmer husbands also known for their company Foggy Bottoms Boys.
