Podcast transcript (Ep. 329)

Listen here.

Two locals were charged in the January 6 U.S. Capital insurrection attempt. The FBI identified ‘em with footage and a tipster. They were allegedly in the Capitol for about 40 minutes that day in 2021 and it's said they admitted their presence there in social media messages. Out of Humboldt County, Kristen Oliver Cunningham and his accomplice Stacey Urhammer are now facing federal charges. These local developments linked to a notorious day in our nation’s history are related to a reported recent FBI raid that occurred in Arcata with guns drawn. *** RHBB

Eureka’s Arkley-supported Measure F campaign raised over $1M. Meagerly on the other side, Measure F’s opposition has reportedly raised just over $9K. Set to be decided by Eurekans at the ballot box in November, a “yes” on F would favor parking availability while preventing many of the city’s Old Town affordable housing projects. F also rezones an unused former school campus for high-density housing. Critics argue it would make essential housing projects too expensive. The pro-parking Measure F, oddly titled “Housing For All,” is monetarily backed almost entirely by conservative businessman Rob Arkley and his company Security National. *** TS

Eureka is building a new 42-space paid parking lot along the boardwalk in Old Town, in place of a vacant lot that’s been unused for years. The project also seals in toxic soil left behind by a scrap metal business. The parking lot is on the Samoa Bridge side of the Bayfront Restaurant. *** Loco

A man visiting Humboldt County died after being trapped in a ‘sand avalanche’ while digging at the beach in Samoa. Northwest of Eureka, Dustin Hanson and his significant other were creating a fort when the sand collapsed. Dustin was buried in the sand for several minutes as crews used special equipment and chainsawed through a big log to get to him. He died after being airlifted to the hospital. It’s an incredibly tragic incident that shows the dangers of digging in unstable sand at the beach. Please stay cautious out there. *** San Francisco Chronicle / RHBB / GoFundMe

A woman was found alive after three days of searching. The 63-year-old went missing south of Eureka as family worried she was fearful and paranoid. Thankfully the wide-scale search resulted in finding her alive before she was sent to the hospital for evaluation. Cheers to the responders and the community members who help when things are challenging here. *** RHBB

Cal Poly Humboldt’s student population only grew by 73 students, making their total of 6,049 way below the CSU system's target. That means they’ll lose some funding, but admins budgeted accordingly. Enrollment at Cal Poly Humboldt was expected to surge after the school's transition to a polytechnic. *** Loco [The success of Cal Poly Humboldt heavily impacts the local job market and economy. -MC]

Two dogs died after swimming in the Eel River at Fernbridge, likely due to algae toxins. Toxic algae blooms thrive in warm water and are dangerous to humans and animals. Health officials are saying to be careful and keep an eye out for blooms where you swim. ***

The "zombie" trains were removed from Eureka’s Balloon Track after sitting there for over 25 years. Stranded there for a long time after the railroad ceased operation in 1998, the plan scrapped a car and sent one to a museum. This clears those eyesores along the Eureka waterfront. *** Loco

A new Eureka ordinance is looking to punish vacant property owners who neglect maintenance. Relying on complaints and inspections, the move aims to reduce the amount of visible problems we see such as broken windows, damaged doors, and general disrepair, with fines ranging from $1K to $5K per month. While inspectors already have their hands full, we’ll see if this translates to building improvements in Eureka. *** TS

Ferndale export Guy Fieri said he communicated with his late father through a medium after his death. Guy mentioned personal messages from his dad, Jim Ferry, just days after his death in January, which helped the celebrity chef cope with his grief. He also said it gave him perspective on funeral arrangements and it deepened his relationship with his mother. *** People [The Ferrys (or Fieri’s) have histories of philanthropy in Ferndale.- MC]

The ghost town of Falk was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The former logging community southeast of Eureka once had a post office, cookhouse, school, general store, dance hall, and a railroad. You can read and see more during hikes into the Headwaters Forest Reserve. *** BLM/CPH

A local is set to showcase his twisted pumpkin sculptures on Food Network again. Eureka’s Mike Craghead will be in Halloween Wars’ All-Star Season 14 starting Sept. 22. We’ll also be able to see Mike’s pumpkin work at various local events such as Boo at the Zoo and Organic Matters’ pumpkin patch. *** TS

British actor Charlie Hunnam visited a Garberville thrift store. Most known for his role as Jax on the motorcycle gang action drama Sons of Anarchy, Charlie explored the store and posed for photos with locals. He’s currently filming in Portland and said he wanted to return to Humboldt County. *** RHBB

Arcata is getting a bunch of new restaurants. Replacing the old Plaza Grill will be a Cuban restaurant, the former location of The Jam will offer simple bar food

the old Mazotti’s location will continue to offer Italian food (but under a new name), a possible new ramen spot may end up near Star’s Hamburgers, and there was a report on an Asian BBQ spot near Arcata Theater Lounge.
