The former fugitive ex-boyfriend of a missing woman has not been charged in her likely death. Bailey Blunt and her ex disappeared a year ago after she tried to get belongings from her ex’s property near Willow Creek. At that time it’s said she texted a friend saying he was drunk and pulled a gun on her. After a 53-day search, the ex, Tyler Burrow was located in rural Oregon with Bailey’s dog and truck. Bailey has still not been located. Investigators are hoping some locals who know more will come forward, preferably with helpful evidence. Officers did not list Tyler as a suspect in their latest news release. *** RHBB

The Wiyot Tribe advanced plans to restore ceremonial structures on Tuluwat Island. The tribe’s progress comes from approval from a Coastal Commission permit. The project includes adding traditional ceremonial houses, possible restrooms, and a possible dining space. The island in northern Eureka is a sacred place for the Wiyot people and tragically the site of a brutal massacre in 1860. *** NCJ [You may remember in 2019 the City of Eureka returned Tuluwat Island to the Wiyot Tribe, a historic event protested provocatively by conservative businessman Rob Arkley, drawing criticism from the Native American community. -MC]

The majority of Eureka City Council candidates seemingly oppose Measure F. Opposition appears to be coming from both Ward 2 candidates, incumbent Scott Bauer and his opponent Thavisaic Lucky Syphanthong, while in Ward 4, Kati Moulton opposes it while Security National employee Kenny Carswell would likely be the lone supporter.  A “yes” on F in Eureka in November would largely favor parking availability in Old Town while preventing many affordable housing projects. It would also rezone a property outside of Old Town for possible housing. Measure F has seen over $1 million in support from conservative businessman Rob Arkley and his company Security National.

Meanwhile, Loco had this sassy headline: “GUEST OPINION: It’s Unfair That Media Coverage Doesn’t Note That Measure F Would Easily Solve All of Eureka’s Most Pressing Problems, Including Housing and Parking and the Economy

A Eureka resident said he altered a "Yes on Measure F" sign placed in his yard without permission, changing it to "No." He believes Measure F supporters used this instance in a mailer to falsely claim opponents were vandalizing or stealing signs. Eureka police reported no such incidents. *** Loco

A statewide poll is showing strong support for Prop 36 and its aims to toughen theft and fentanyl penalties. Heading to California voters in November, the move targets repeat offenders by making any theft a felony for those with two prior theft convictions, and it increases penalties for drug dealing tied to the fentanyl crisis. New data shows that 71% of likely voters favor Prop 36. Critics argue it’ll grow prison populations and take funds from mental health efforts. We’ll see how Humboldt County votes on it in November. *** Bay Area News

A traffic stop unfruitful in a suspected marijuana robbery instead resulted in a DUI arrest. Officers stopped a vehicle matching the description of an armed cannabis robbery — likely at gunpoint, there was no stolen stuff or weapons in the truck, but they did net an alleged robber of… sober driving. *** RHBB

Local law enforcement gathered largely in Garberville as cannabis growers prepare for the fall harvest. A skid steer, often used in cannabis-related raids, was spotted. *** RHBB

Cal Poly Humboldt disallowed students from sleeping in vehicles on campus last year while other colleges in the state allow it. Via CalMatters, our local developments in Arcata were juxtaposed with Long Beach City College’s Safe Parking Program, which allows homeless students to park overnight and access resources like showers and Wi-Fi. Housing insecurity has continued to be a rising concern for college students statewide.

Our county’s aviation director was seemingly encouraged to resign following a recent air show. Without noting an official reason, County Supervisors voted 3-2 to accept the resignation of the high-ranking county official with the more conservative supes, Rex Bohn and Michelle Bushnell, voting “No”. *** Loco [We’ll see if more clarity on this subject comes to light. -MC]

Two horses were euthanized after suffering injuries while racing at the Humboldt County Fair. Critics have called these deaths preventable, with Ferndale’s track having a higher-than-average fatality rate. *** RHBB
